Planned work: Werribee Substation Works Starts Tue Feb 10 Until Fri Feb 20
From Tuesday 10 February to Friday 20 February 2026, electrical works will be undertaken by Metro Trains on the Werribee Substation. Electrical works are required to reinstate a cable which has failed and that critically feeds the substation. To allow for the reinstatement works, one large River Red Gum tree, situated next to the substation, will need to be removed. Q. Will trains still be running while these works are taking place? Trains will continue to run while these works are being done. The works can be safely undertaken whilst trains are running. Q. Will there be a lot of noise and dust? Works will only be carried out during daylight hours (7am to 5pm), Monday to Friday to limit any noise & disturbance for the local community. Appropriate dust suppression measures will be put in place to mitigate airborne dust from construction activities. Q. Is the tree of significance? The tree was not identified on the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Register of Significant Trees. Q. Does Metro Trains have approval to remove the tree? Metro Trains has been granted endorsement from the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action (DECCA) to remove the single Red River Gum tree. Metro Trains did explore alternate options. However, the construction of a pit and trench is required to accommodate the emergency cable installation. It is not possible to undertake these works without significant and unavoidable intrusion to the River Gum Tree. Q. Is there a replanting plan for the removed tree? To ensure no net loss to Victoria’s biodiversity, Metro Trains has secured a native vegetation offset planting plan within the Melbourne Water Catchment boundary or Wyndham City district. Q. What measures are being put in place to ensure the protection of other native vegetation? A tree protection zone (TPZ) will be implemented to protect remaining trees on this site with the oversight qualified arborist. Any trees removed within tree protection zone (TPZ) will be applied for with the project endorsement form from DECCA. Q. Were any other flora & fauna identified? During investigation site works, no significant flora or fauna were identified. Thank you for your understanding as we carry out these safety works.
